Public awareness the focus of World Osteoporosis Day Campaign in Costa Rica
The Fundacion Costarricense de Osteoporosis, with the help of industry and other partners, focused its month-long campaign on heightening awareness of osteoporosis among the general public.
This meeting, kindly sponsorsed by Merck Sharp & Dohme, was directed to patients who suffer from osteoporosis. The patients came from all over the country to learn about osteoporosis, nutrition and participate in a question and answer session.
The society initiated reports on TV, radio and newspapers, with society officials and osteoporosis experts giving interviews to the media. On October 20th,Costa Rica's leading newspaper dedicated a six-page report to osteoporosis, with the input of different specialists and the real-life stories of two patients.
A meeting was also held with patients in one of the most important hotels in the city, with the participation of a nutritionist and medical doctors.
Another meeting was held with 300 women from all over the country for education in osteoporosis, so that they can transfer their experiences to women all over Costa Rica.
The society also reactivated an 800 line for free public access to general information about osteoporosis.

The public exhibition included a speech about nutrition in osteoporosis and the "invest in your bones" report focusing on children's nutrition and exercise
Dr.Luis Jiménez-Briceño, CEO of the
Fundación Costarricense de Osteoporosis, spoke at the November WOD event which was sponsored by Costa Rica's leading dairy company, Cooperativa de Productores de Leche Dos Pinos.
A professional cook demonstrated "calcium" rich recipes for the audience.
