LAUNCH OF NEW OSTEOPOROSIS CAMPAIGN
A ‘DREAM’ COME TRUE
The Lebanese Osteoporosis Prevention Society (LOPS), together with the World Health Organization (WHO) launched ‘Dream’, an ambitious new osteoporosis prevention program, during a press conference held at the Lebanese Press Syndicate on 17th March 2003

A four-member panel, consisting of Mrs. Maha Makari, President of LOPS, Dr. Jihad Ezzeddine of LOPS Executive Committee, Mr. Gabriel Rafca of the WHO and Mr. Mohamed Baalbeki, President of the Press Syndicate, gave an explanation of the program to the media, followed by a question and answer session.
‘Dream’ presents the opportunity to 1,500 persons at high risk for osteoporosis to take a complete BMD DEXA test at the much-reduced price of $ 20. This price represents half of the original, also reduced, price of being offered by LOPS, the other half being offered by Merck Sharp and Dohme.
Those found to have osteoporosis could also then, with a prescription from their doctor, go on to receive medications provided by the Society at very low prices, which would be available at dispensaries of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) throughout the country. It will also provide an opportunity to the WHO to use the data from these BMD tests to compile studies on osteoporosis in Lebanon.
‘Dream’ has been launched with a full-scale media campaign: television and newspaper advertisements, roadside billboards and posters explaining the risk factors of the disease. Posters are due to appear in hospitals and doctors’ clinics in Arabic, English and French, and television interviews given.
